The Capitals shed the black, blue and copper color scheme when they introduced their current red, white, and blue look in 2007-08.

The active Russian NHL points leader, Ovechkin has brought a combination of power, speed, strength and finesse since he was drafted by the Washington Capitals first overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft following four years with HC Dynamo Moscow.

The 2004-05 NHL lockout ended two days after Ovechkin signed his rookie contract. The Great Eight made his NHL debut on October 5, 2005, and won the Calder Trophy after electrifying the league with 52 goals and 54 assists.

At age 24, Ovechkin was named Washington's 14th captain, the third-youngest in the league at the time.

The son of Mikhail Ovechkin, a former professional soccer player, and Tatyana Ovechkina, a Soviet basketball player in the 1976 and 1980 Olympics, Ovechkin was destined for greatness on ice when he first gripped a hockey stick at age two.
