Eight countries participated in the tournament: Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, and the United States.

Prior to the tournament, Team USA played three exhibition games and wore this set of white jerseys in a 3-1 victory over Canada on August 23, 2004 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, OH, and a 2-0 victory over Russia on August 27, 2004 at the same venue.

Expectations were high for Team USA after it defeated Canada for gold, two games to one, in the best-of-three '96 Finals. After a disappointing group stage in which Team USA defeated Slovakia and lost to Canada and Russia, the U.S. matched its goal total in the pool stage in a 5-3 quarterfinal victory over Russia. but were eliminated by Finland in the semifinals, 2-1.

Amonte, in five tournament games, posted one assist. Amonte played for the Philadelphia Flyers prior to the 2004-2005 lockout and went on to sign with the Calgary Flames through free agency in August 2005.
